Learn the ins and outs of creating a mosaic a day while breaking through creative blocks in this two day workshop.
Date: Saturday and Sunday 8 and 9 March, 2025
Time: 10am - 5pm
Fee: $375.00 plus $35 materials payable on the day
Based on Margo's Mosaic a Day project and blog, this hands-on workshop is perfect for those needing a nudge to get back in the studio, those interested in trying new materials, or those looking for new ways to express themselves in mosaic.
With much of the art world geared towards producing larger pieces, particularly in mosaic (commonly used for installations), working small may seem an oddity. However, incorporating small piece into your studio practice can have many benefits , including lower price point for sales, low time and cost commitment, and a more rapid increase in skill level of the artist.
The workshop starts with a lecture about the Mosaic a Day project and the incredible discoveries Margo made while working small. After delving into the various benefits of small scale mosaics, she will discuss design issues, sources of inspiration, and tackling procrastination. Following this lecture with lots of examples, a demonstration of her approach to starting a “Mosaic a Day” will take place.
Participants will then create two small scale mixed media mosaics with a variety of materials, some of which may be new to the participant. As students work, Margo will give impromptu mini lessons based on the projects everyone is working on. These can include thoughts on andamento, cutting demonstrations, working with cement mortar, and so on. Participants should expect to break through lots of artistic blocks in this class! Learn to use new materials, to combine and use materials in unexpected ways, to incorporate focal points, and to think outside your usual box.
Materials: Bring with you a range of materials from your stash. You are encouraged to bring along “weird stuff” from your studio (we all have this), materials you have been wanting to try but haven’t for whatever reason, as well as a selection of your usual tesserae. You will perhaps see your own materials in a new light, as you are encouraged to experiment and try out different concepts. As well as your own stash, you will also have access to select from a vast collection of stained glass, and interesting bits and pieces from Sue Leitch’s studio, which is included in your materials fee, (along with substrates and adhesives).
What to bring: Please bring the usual tools that you would use to work in mosaics and protective eyewear. A full range of tools and equipment is also available to use at the studio.
