Learn to create mosaic art using minerals, stone, and glass!
Date: Saturday and Sunday April 12/13, 2025
Time: 10am - 5pm
Fee: $300 plus $60 materials fee
Marble and semiprecious stones from the earth, smalti from the glass furnaces of Italy and Mexico. A better marriage of mosaic materials has never been found! Come learn how to mix these amazing elements together.
Working with marble, smalti, and "found treasures", students will create a 10" by 8" work. After learning how to incorporate semiprecious gems as "rock stars" or as "back up singers" into your design, you'll be able to chose from a range of smalti and stone for the remainder of your piece.
Students will work with hammer and hardie as well as nippers in this class. If unfamiliar with the hammer and hardie, never fear! Margo has taught numerous people how to use one, and will have you up and chopping in no time with her hammer and hardie tutorial. Rock and smalti can have a mind of their own, and learning how to use a hammer and hardie is the first step in mastering them.
As work begins on your piece using thinset, Margo will provide lots of individual attention as you delve into mixing your materials. Andamento--always a challenging subject--will be discussed in terms of its ability to create feeling and atmosphere. Don't just plunk down your tesserae, make them flow and sing!
Most materials will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring their own treasured gems like pyrite, ammonite fossils, selenite, fluorite, desert roses, etc, or choose from carefully selected semiprecious items (additional fee).
